Our ceramic coating page for Raleigh drivers lists three Gtechniq options with year labels printed on the page: EVO V5 as a 3 Year Coating, Crystal Serum Light as a 5 Year Coating and Crystal Serum Ultra as a 9 Year Coating. Those figures are product ratings, not a warranty and not a promise for every car. Prep, parking, washing and how you handle North Carolina summer heat, spring pollen and winter road brine decide how close a coating gets to its rating.
Choosing a Gtechniq tier
Pick the tier based on how long you plan to keep the car, how much it is driven and where it sits. The table below uses only what our ceramic page prints. It is not a warranty schedule.
| Product | Rated on our page | What the page says |
|---|---|---|
| EVO V5 | 3 Year Coating | “High gloss, slickness, and excellent water beading.” |
| Crystal Serum Light | 5 Year Coating | “Outstanding gloss, protection, and durability at an accessible level.” “Ideal for daily-driven vehicles.” |
| Crystal Serum Ultra | 9 Year Coating | “An elite, professional-only coating” |
Those labels belong to the named products as listed on the page. They are not a single “ceramic lasts N years” answer for every finish in North Carolina.

If you already know how long you will keep the car and how it is parked and washed, our team can walk you through which Gtechniq option fits before you book.
What wears a coating down
A ceramic coating is a thin layer bonded to the clear coat. It makes washing easier, adds gloss to corrected paint and helps resist light chemical etching, UV and contamination. It is a far thinner layer than film, so it does not stop rock chips or deep scratches. It does not replace washing either.
Prep. A coating locks in whatever is under it. Paint that is decontaminated and corrected first gives the coating a clean surface to bond to. Coating over swirls, wax or polishing residue gives it a weaker start.
Washing. Gtechniq, the coating maker, says the main cause of gloss loss is the build-up of micro scratches from washing. Harsh soaps and brush tunnels can wear the slick top layer faster and add the fine scratches a coating is meant to slow down.
Top layer versus base. In its coating FAQ, Gtechniq says lost beading is often surface contamination and can usually be restored with a full decontamination wash, which it recommends at least every few months. It also says its separate water-repelling top layers have a maximum durability of 2 years, while the base coating stays in place underneath. When water stops beading, that alone does not prove the coating is gone.
Rated durability, warranty and real-world life. Rated durability is the figure a maker gives a product, assuming correct application and care. Warranty terms are a separate contract with their own conditions. Real-world life is what your car gets after North Carolina summers, pollen seasons and winter trips. The three are not the same number.
How to keep a coating performing in North Carolina
- Wash with a pH-neutral car soap, soft wash mitts and clean towels. Skip brush tunnel washes.
- Rinse more often during pollen season instead of letting layers build up through dew and sun.
- Remove bird droppings, bugs and sap promptly, especially in summer heat.
- Rinse the lower panels and wheel areas after driving on brined or salted roads.
- Plan a decontamination wash every few months before deciding a coating has failed.
- Do not wax over the coating. Gtechniq recommends against it because wax dulls the water-repelling effect.
- Ask which aftercare products and maintenance steps apply to your coating. Our team can spell those out for the option you choose.
North Carolina conditions that matter
These are everyday stresses, not a published “years off” formula. Care changes the outcome more than the raw climate numbers.

Summer heat and sun. North Carolina summers are humid and very warm, with highs typically in the high 80s °F in central and coastal regions, according to the North Carolina State Climate Summary. Bird droppings, bug splatter and tree sap that bake on the paint get harder to remove and can etch the surface, coated or not. Garage or shade parking cuts that exposure compared with an open lot all day.
Pine pollen. NC State Extension says tree pollen typically peaks between late March and early April. Fresh pollen usually rinses off a coated surface easily. A layer left through weeks of morning dew and afternoon sun can bond more stubbornly. The coating makes the rinse easier. It does not make the rinse optional.
Winter road brine. NCDOT pretreats roads with brine, a solution of water and 23 percent salt, and spreads salt and sand after plowing. Even in a light winter, a drive on treated roads leaves residue on the lower doors, rocker panels and wheel areas. Rinse it off soon after rather than letting it sit for weeks.
Ceramic coating vs paint protection film
A coating handles gloss, easier cleaning and chemical resistance. Paint protection film handles impact. Gtechniq tells buyers to be skeptical of any coating marketed as meaningful stone-chip protection.
Gtechniq also describes a common setup: film on the leading edges, such as the front bumper, part or all of the hood and the mirrors, with a coating on the rest of the car. Our Aston Martin Vantage project with full PPF and ceramic coating pairs full-body clear film with a full ceramic coating and window tint.

The guide to PPF vs ceramic coating for Raleigh drivers compares the two in more detail.
Frequently asked questions
How long does ceramic coating last in North Carolina?
Our ceramic page lists Gtechniq EVO V5, Crystal Serum Light and Crystal Serum Ultra at 3, 5 and 9 years as product ratings. How close a car gets depends on prep, parking, washing and care through NC heat, pollen and road brine. Those ratings are not a warranty.
Does ceramic coating wear off?
The slick, water-repelling top layer fades first, often because of surface contamination. Gtechniq says a decontamination wash usually restores beading, and the base coating can remain after the top layer wears. A coating still needs regular washing, and harsh washing shortens its useful life.
Is ceramic coating enough without PPF?
Not if rock chips are the concern. A coating is far thinner than film and will not absorb impacts from road debris. Film on the front end with a coating on the rest is a common pairing.
Which Gtechniq option should I get?
It depends on how long you will keep the car, how much it is driven and where it is parked. We list EVO V5, Crystal Serum Light and Crystal Serum Ultra on the ceramic page, and our team can explain how they differ for your vehicle.
